Cobalt Quill began as a private letter circulated among colleagues in the Wan Chai legal community in early 2020. The editorial premise was straightforward: the legal industry generates a great deal of commentary, but much of it is promotional, partial, or simply too brief to be useful. Practitioners who wanted to understand the structural and operational shifts reshaping their profession had to assemble that picture themselves, from scattered sources, over time.
The founders — a former partner with two decades of experience in commercial litigation and a legal operations specialist who had worked across three jurisdictions — decided to write the letter they wished someone else had written first. Within a year, circulation had grown well beyond the original circle. In 2022, Cobalt Quill registered as a formal publishing operation and moved to the current office in Wan Chai.

Today Cobalt Quill publishes every Tuesday without interruption. The letter covers staffing and workforce patterns, technology adoption decisions, organisational design in law firms and in-house teams, and reading recommendations from the wider literature on professional services. It does not carry advertising, does not accept sponsored content, and does not share subscriber data.
The mission has not changed since the first issue: to give the legal professional community in Hong Kong and across the region a correspondent whose only obligation is to the reader.
